This 1975 Ski-Doo commercial brings back some pleasant memories:

Ride right, ride safe and stay on the trail

I remember riding back in the late 60's and early 70's and if you wore a helmet, you probably were racing and using a Bell 3/4 helmet. The factory guys may have been wearing full helmets, but they were very pricey and about 1/3 the cost of a new sled.

The standard clothing line up with me and my friends were cotton waffle long johns, blue jeans, heavy wool socks, Herman Survivor leather hunting boots, layers of shirts, wool sweater, Surplus Air Force parka and gloves, and a wool hat.  If it got really cold, you would pull the draw string on the parka hood and hug the snowmobile engine for warmth.  Back then we were more concerned with hypothermia, frostbite and staying dry than running into another sled or stationary object.

We rode mainly on the farm acreage and with 16-20 HP, speed rarely 50-60 MPH.  Trails were not as mainstream as they are today and I remember blazing the Lost Trail Sno Riders trail through the family farm after each snow storm.  We also did not have the number of snowmobiles there are today and we did not have riders transporting their sleds from southern areas.

Back then it was a different scene completely.
